  Ben Coopwood, MD, FACS
Assistant Professor – University of Texas Medical Branch Austin Programs

Dr. Coopwood is the Program Director for the Department of Surgery Education for University of Texas Medical Branch Austin Programs. Dr. Coopwood grew up in Austin and graduated from the University of Texas. He then attended medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston and completed his general surgical residency at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Coopwood is certified by the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Coopwood is committed to the care of patients here in his hometown. He and his wife Robin were thrilled to be able to stay in Austin and raise their family here. Dr. Coopwood spends much of his free time with his son, Travis, and his daughters Katie and Sara. He also enjoys hunting, fishing and waterskiing.

  Drew Fielder, MD, FACS
Assistant Professor – University of Texas Medical Branch Austin Programs

Dr. Fielder has served as Chief of Surgery at University Medical Center at Brackenridge since 2003.  He also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Austin Medical Education Programs as well as Seton Northwest Surgical Peer Review and Brackenridge Trauma Peer Review.

Dr. Fielder received his medical degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston in 1991. He completed both his general surgery internship and residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Houston. Dr. Fielder is board certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Fielder is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association and the Travis County Medical Society.

Dr. Fielder and his wife, Tracy have three children – Zachary, Brandon and Mamie. When he’s not spending time with his family, you can find Dr. Fielder getting in a round of golf or enjoying the outdoors.

  Oscar Rios, MD, FACS
Assistant Professor – University of Texas Medical Branch Austin Programs

Originally from Del Rio, Dr. Oscar Rios moved to Austin to pursue his undergraduate studies at St. Edward’s University, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree. Dr. Rios then attended medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. Following his graduation, Dr. RIos completed his General Surgery training at The Methodist Hospital in Houston.

In 2006, Dr. Rios joined the Texas Surgical Group, and is happy to be back in Austin enjoying the live music and great food.

  John P. Sabra, MD, FACS
Assistant Professor – University of Texas Medical Branch Austin Programs

John P. Sabra, MD, spent time serving with the United States Navy in the Middle East before coming to Austin. He graduated from Brown University School of Medicine in 1995 and completed his residency in General Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center/Parkland Memorial Hospital. Dr. Sabra is board certified with the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Sabra and his wife, Ximena de Sabra, an ophthalmologist, enjoy spending family time together. When their two boys Benjamin and Daniel aren’t keeping him busy, Dr. Sabra enjoys running, gardening and water sports.

  John M. Uecker, MD, FACS
Assistant Professor – University of Texas Medical Branch Austin Programs

John Uecker, MD, is originally from Houston, but is happy to be in Austin where he completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Texas. Dr. Uecker attended medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and completed his residency at the Methodist Hospitals of Dallas. He then served in the United States Navy on the USS Enterprise. He was also deployed with the Marines during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Dr. Uecker, his wife Janet, daughter Olivia, and new baby Michael feel right at home in Austin. When Dr. Uecker isn’t busy with his family you can find him running, golfing, boating, wake boarding or just enjoying the outdoors.
